Instructions
Protect Your Investment
It is IMPERATIVE that you follow the pre-care and aftercare instructions to ensure the best possible healed results. Once you leave my studio, it's all up to you! At the end of your appointment (not including removal), you will receive an aftercare kit with the supplies you need to care for your new tattoo.
THESE INSTRUCTIONS APPLY BEFORE ALL PERMANENT COSMETIC PROCEDURES, INCLUDING FOLLOW-UPS AND COLOR BOOSTS.
• Discontinue use of chemical peels or retinol products 4 WEEKS PRIOR to the procedure
• Discontinue use of any acids (glycolic, salicylic, lactic, AHA, BHA) and any skin care products that contain these ingredients around the procedure area 2 WEEKS PRIOR to your appointment (check topical makeup products for these ingredients as well)
• Do not use lash serums for 6 weeks before any eyeliner procedure
• Wear glasses, not contacts, the day of the procedure
• Do not wax or tint eyebrows 3 days prior to the procedure (this applies only to eyebrow procedures)
• You must be off Accutane for at least 1 year (no exceptions)
Avoid the following 24 HOURS PRIOR to the procedure:
• Exercising/sweating
• Alcohol
• Caffeine
• Sun exposure/tanning
• Aspirin, Niacin, Vitamin E, Advil/Ibuprofen
• Fish oil
• Hair, skin, & nail supplements
• Protein shakes or green juices
*Please note: You will be more sensitive during your menstrual cycle.
*If you get fillers, they should be done 6 weeks prior to your scheduled procedure or 6 weeks after the procedure.
*If you use Botox, it should be used either 4 weeks prior to your scheduled procedure or 4 weeks after the procedure.
*If you have glaucoma, you cannot have permanent eyeliner done.
*If you want permanent eyeliner and you have any known eye conditions, contact me first.
*You must have eyelash extensions removed prior to any eyeliner procedure.
♥LIP BLUSH: If you have ever had a cold sore/fever blisters/herpes (even if it was many years ago), you MUST contact your doctor or dentist for a 7-day prescription for Valtrex to start 3 days prior to your appointment. Lip blush tattooing can cause cold sore flare-ups which inhibits healing. Even if you have never had a cold sore, the virus can lay dormant so taking Valtrex is recommended regardless.
*You are not a good candidate for permanent cosmetics if:
• You are pregnant or breastfeeding
• You have a pacemaker/defibrillator
• You suffer from keloid (raised, purple) scarring
• You suffer from hemophilia
*You are not a good candidate for permanent cosmetics if you take these medications: Triflusal, Clopidogrel, Prasugrel, Ticagrelor, Ticlopidine, Cilostazol, Vorapaxar, Dipyridamole, Coumadin, Pradaxia, Xarelto, Eliquis, Savaysa
The day of the treatment: Absorb
Gently blot the area with clean tissue to absorb excess lymph fluid. Do this every 10-20 minutes for the full day until oozing has stopped. Removing this fluid prevents hardening of the lymph. Begin the following steps (wash + moisturize) the night of your appointment.
Days 1-7: Wash
Wash daily to remove bacteria and dead skin. (Don’t worry…THIS DOES NOT REMOVE THE PIGMENT!) Gently wash your eyebrows each morning and night with water and the provided Cetaphil gentle cleanser. With a very light touch, use your fingertips to gently cleanse the eyebrows. Use circular motions on the area for 10 seconds and rinse with water, ensuring that all soap is rinsed away. To dry, gently pat with a clean tissue. DO NOT use any cleansers containing acids (glycolic, salicylic, lactic, AHA/BHA) or any exfoliators. **Hyaluronic Acid (HA) is OK.**
Days 1-7: Moisturize
After cleansing, apply a rice grain amount of the provided aftercare ointment with a clean cotton swab and spread it across the treated area. Be sure not to apply too much, as this will suffocate your skin and delay healing. The ointment should be barely noticeable on the skin. Never put the ointment on a wet or damp tattoo. Always use the cleanser and aftercare ointment duo together.
Important Reminders:
- Use a fresh pillowcase (do not sleep on your face for the first 10 days).
- DO NOT PICK! Let any scabbing or dry skin naturally fall off. Picking/scratching can cause scarring or loss of color.
- No facials, botox, chemical treatments, or microdermabrasion for 4 weeks.
- Avoid sweating, hot showers, swimming, hot tubs etc. for 10 days.
- Avoid direct sun exposure and/or tanning for 4 weeks after procedure. Wear a hat when outdoors.
- After the first 10 days, ***always apply sunscreen*** to the treated area prior to sun exposure.
- Do not apply topical makeup to the treated area for 10 days.
- Do not use any exfoliating products (scrubs or chemical) on the brows for 4 weeks.
- Your follow-up appointment will take place no sooner than 8 weeks after your first appointment.
Please Note:
Everyone’s skin heals differently and results cannot be guaranteed. It is normal for the pigment to look gray or seemingly disappear after the first 10 days. After natural exfoliation (flaking and peeling), the skin underneath is new skin. Think of it as looking at something through a couple sheets of wax paper. Over the next couple weeks, the color will clarify and become more defined. Any adjustments to shape and/or color can be made at the 8 week follow-up appointment.
Important note about showering:
Try to limit your showers to 5 minutes so you do not create too much steam. Keep your face out of the water while you wash your body. At the end of your shower, wash your hair. It is best to wash your face outside of the shower to avoid saturating the treated area with excess water. A few splashes are fine but do not allow the treated area to soak in water. Blot off excess water as needed.
PROTECT YOUR INVESTMENT… Remember, with the proper prep and aftercare routine you will have much better results with your permanent cosmetic procedure. Once you leave my chair, it is your responsibility to care for the treated area. Don’t forget your new favorite acronym: AWM – Absorb, Wash, Moisturize!
◊ If desired, apply an icepack to eyes for 10-20 minutes. Ice helps reduce swelling and aids in healing. Cold witch hazel on cotton pads is also soothing.
◊ Apply Vaseline prior to showering for 7 days or until tattooed area has healed. Blot ointment off immediately after shower. Use very sparingly.
◊ Clean tattooed area with baby shampoo for 7 days.
◊ Do not use mascara for 7 days.
◊ Do not expose eyes to the full pressure of shower water for 7 days.
◊ Do not apply makeup to tattooed area for 2 weeks.
◊ No sweating. Sweat contains salt, and salt removes pigment.
◊ Do not soak eyes in pool, hot tub, lake, or when bathing for 2 weeks.
◊ Absolutely no: picking, scrubbing, or exfoliating of the tattooed area. Allow eyeliner to flake off on its own.
◊ Do not expose to sun or tanning beds for at least 30 days.
◊ Absolutely no cleansers or skincare products around the eye area that contain the following ingredients: Retin-A, retinol, glycolic acid, salicylic acid, AHA, BHA, vitamin C, anti-aging, or anti-acne products.
◊ You may apply small amount of Aquaphor to the tattooed area if needed – only if the skin feels tight.
Please note:
◊ Pigment will appear darker and more sharply defined immediately following the procedure.
◊ As the skin heals, exfoliating/scabbing will take place and new skin will heal over. The new skin can temporarily cause the pigment to appear “foggy.”
◊ As healing progresses, color will soften. Final results are typically seen 4 weeks post-procedure.
◊ The follow-up appointment will take place no sooner than 8 weeks after the first appointment.
◊ Failure to follow aftercare instructions may cause loos of pigment, discoloration, or infection.
♥ If you have ever had a cold sore/fever blisters/herpes (even if it was many years ago), you MUST contact your doctor or dentist for a 5-day prescription for Valtrex to start 48 hours before your appointment. Lip blush tattooing can cause flare-ups which inhibits healing.
♥ You will likely experience some swelling immediately after your procedure and potentially for the first 24-48 hours. You can ice for 20 minutes at a time as needed. They will likely feel sensitive and a little sore.
♥ Keep your lips consistently hydrated with Aquaphor throughout the first 10 days of healing. Do not use other types of chapstick or any lip product containing menthol (i.e Burt’s Bees) while healing.
♥ Refrain from using any lip makeup while healing. You could cause an infection or otherwise damage the healing skin.
♥ Be cautious eating hot, spicy, or salty foods. Avoid biting/licking your lips as much as possible, and make sure to keep your lips clean of excess food/drink.
♥ Minimize sun exposure for the first two weeks as lips will be very sensitive and sun exposure will harm a healing tattoo.
♥ After the first two weeks, it is best to consistently apply a lip balm with sunscreen to prolong your tattoo.
Days 1-3: Lips will be sensitive and likely have some swelling that will dissipate after 24-48 hours. Color will begin to appear darker/bolder/more like lipstick as the skin is healing over.
Days 4-6: Lips will be chapped and start to peel. DO NOT pick at them or pull off any dead skin. It has to exfoliate on its own.
Days 7-13: The color will appear much lighter than expected. THIS IS NORMAL. The new pigment will be under a haze of new skin and will bloom in the next stage.
Days 14-21: Color will bloom back and reappear during this time. It is normal for your lips to be a bit drier than usual during this time – make sure to keep them hydrated!
Your follow-up will be no sooner than 8 weeks after your first appointment. Color boosts are typically a single annual appointment.
KEEP THE AREA CLEAN and open to the air. Do not cover with a bandage or the like. Oxygen provides proper, more efficient healing. Do not touch the area. If necessary, make sure your hands are completely clean.
DO NOT SOAK the treated area in water. You can shower as normal, but keep the area out of the direct stream of water and avoid splashing. If water comes into contact with the treated area, gently pat it dry.
NO SWEATING, swimming, hot tubs, saunas, tanning, or exercise. NO EXCEPTIONS.
DO NOT DISRUPT THE SCABBING PROCESS by picking, scratching, etc. All scabbing needs to fall off naturally. Forcing the scab to come off before it is ready and healed will disrupt the removal process and likely cause scarring. The longer the scab stays on, the more optimal the results.
TREAT THE AREA WITH TLC. Protect your investment and do not do anything that could cause problems for the treated area.
ONCE ALL SCABBING HAS NATURALLY FALLEN OFF, apply one drop of vitamin E oil 3 to 4 times throughout the day for a minimum of 4 weeks (or until your next appointment). Do not start applying the vitamin E oil while scabs are still present. It is our goal to keep the area as dry as possible until ALL scabs have naturally fallen off.
PLEASE NOTE:
- You can expect some redness on and around the treated area immediately after the procedure because there is blood close to the surface of the skin. This is good as blood pushes unwanted ink out of the skin.
- It is important to the process and integrity of the skin that 8 full weeks of healing take place before another session can be done. No exceptions.
- Lightening and/or removing unwanted pigment is a long process and patience is required. You may not see results after the first session; you must have realistic expectations and understand that this is not an immediate solution.
- I cannot predict nor guarantee how many sessions will be necessary for desired results. Some take 2 sessions, some take 5; it depends on the saturation and color of the old ink, as well as how deeply it was implanted into the skin.
